The Greater Evil

2015 · 7:51 · produced by Lee Perna · written and directed by William R. Coughlan

Lilith Delaney has snagged a plum assignment with the campaign team of Victor Balch, a brash but popular candidate for the Presidency. Though initially seeing it as just another job, Lilith gradually falls under the candidate’s spell… until she catches a glimpse of his horrific true nature.

Tohubohu’s crack creative team — apparently not satisfied with back-to-back competitions in DC and Baltimore — decided to venture into the madcap weekend waters for yet a third time in a single season as part of the inaugural 48 Hour Film Politics & Comedy Project. In a departure from our usual comedic fare, “The Greater Evil” explored themes of political extremism and the nature of unquestioning support. The film was created entirely between September 25th through the 27th, 2015, and premiered at the Burke Theater at the Naval Heritage Center on Friday, October 2 — ultimately taking “Best Film” honors.

Across 2015, America watched in flabbergasted shock as the clear frontrunner for a major political party not only failed to self-immolate, but actually thrived proffering a campaign of narcissism, ignorance, bigotry and outright lunacy. Despite my long-held assumption that the more odious elements of a political agenda must of course be couched in some semblance of outward humanity, here was inescapable evidence of my error. Still, rather than losing all faith in the basic decency of my fellow citizens, I chose instead to imagine a more palatable explanation: the candidate must be exercising some nefarious, supernatural hold over his followers. After all, nobody could willingly follow an agenda that overtly repugnant. Inspired by the tongue-in-cheek slogan from the long-running Cthulhu for President campaign — ‘Don’t settle for the lesser evil’ — I posited a more explicitly Lovecraft-influenced presidential aspirant for ‘The Greater Evil,’ taking his political ambitions to their logical conclusion.
